Job opportunity: Parliamentary Assistant (part-time)

Paul Sweeney MP is looking to recruit a Parliamentary Assistant to provide close support and personal assistance in his London office. This will be a part-time role based in the House of Commons office covering 2.5 days in a mid-week arrangement (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday).

The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual with a personal commitment to Labour, Co-operative, and Trade Union values; able to work, prioritise and task manage with minimal supervision, with a flexible approach to this varied role. The successful post-holder will have excellent time management skills, will be well-organised and proficient in all aspects of IT and communications. This post is suitable for a degree-level qualified person, or with the equivalent experience working in personal assistant, administrative and research roles.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain current knowledge of Bills, EDMs, legislation and debates;
  • Submit applications for debates, manage requests to speak and urgent questions, and draft written and oral parliamentary questions;
  • Undertake research, provide briefings, and write articles on a wide variety of issues;
  • Diary management, ensuring the Member is notified of upcoming priorities, and progress routine administration;
  • Handle and manage email and telephone enquiries for the Member in the Westminster office;
  • Prepare and edit correspondence, communications and other documents;
  • Respond effectively to correspondence and enquiries from both constituents and organisations on policy issues;
  • Work with stakeholders on a range of campaigns and projects;
  • Organise and oversee high-quality events in Parliament;
  • Utilisation of social media tools to generate Facebook and Twitter content as required to promote the MP’s work to constituents.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Excellent rapid research and writing skills, reflecting good attention to detail;
  • The ability to take the initiative and prioritise workload under pressure, while ensuring routine tasks are expedited;
  • Strong organisational skills to prioritise, with the ability to work efficiently to tight deadlines;
  • A good working knowledge of politics and parliament;
  • Excellent time management and multitasking skills;
  • Confidence and the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders, including the Member’s constituents, visitors, guests, groups;
  • An aptitude in the utilisation of all aspects of IT; including use of content/client relationship management systems, social media, website content management systems, and Microsoft Office functionality.

Springburn Winter Gardens Bids for Funding

The Springburn Winter Gardens are a symbol of Springburn’s former glory. When the glasshouse was destroyed in the 1980s, no funds were available to conduct restoration works. Now, years later, the time has come for the Winter Gardens to be brought back and transformed into something new.

As a founder member and secretary of the Springburn Winter Gardens Trust​, it gives me great pride to see an application for the Heritage Lottery Fund being submitted, I have written this letter in support of the application and hope that it will be successful.

This part of Glasgow deserves the opportunity for investment; the people of Springburn deserve roses as well as bread.

 

 

 

Urgent Collection for Carntyne Foodbank

The foodbank run by Carntyne Credit Union is running dangerously low on supplies, so for the next two weeks, starting 15th August, I will be making my constituency office at 252 Saracen Street a collection point for the foodbank.

Please feel free to drop essentials off between 9am-5pm Monday to Friday.

 

 

 

Possilpark Gala Day 2018

One of the first events I attended after becoming the Member of Parliament for Glasgow North East last year was the Possilpark Gala Day, so one year later, on the 11th of August, it was great to be back and to see it go from strength to strength.

Possilpark has a fantastic community spirit and that was definitely on show today.

Alexandra Park Festival Day 2018

On the 28th of July, I attended the Alexandra Park festival alongside Councillor Elaine McDougall. Each year the parade has grown in numbers and this year was no different. A fantastic day of community spirit up at Ally Park.

 

Thanks to our office intern, Olivia

On Tuesday, 7th August I welcomed Olivia, a local young person into my office as an intern.

She’s a bright, highly motivated young person. I hope that she had a good week shadowing me and learning about how a Member of Parliament’s office works on a daily basis.

Thanks to local group African Challenge for supporting Olivia and encouraging young, ethnic women to get involved in politics.

 

Ruchazie Housing Association visit

Parliamentary recess is a great opportunity to spend more time in the constituency. It is a chance to visit local groups and organisations along with meeting with constituents. One such visit I’ve made was to Ruchazie Housing Association. They do great work to provide good quality housing and are committed to continuing their community involvement.

I had a good day out in Royston on Friday, 3rd of August with James Kelly, list MSP for Glasgow, speaking with constituents about their issues and letting them know we are here if they ever need any help.

Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries visit

I enjoyed visiting the Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi) in Springburn on Wednesday, 1st of August after the UK Government announced additional funding for disabled people in work. This is a direct result of me raising concerns as the local MP with the Minister for Disabled People, Work and Health, Sarah Newton, in Parliament earlier this year about the scrapping of the Protected Places Scheme.

After raising the concerns of RSBi and Community Trade Union reps, RSBi was accepted onto the Protected Places pilot scheme and so impressed senior civil servants that they have decided not only to maintain the current grant level but to increase it.

Commenting on this breakthrough for the workforce, RSBi Community Trade Union Branch Secretary Steven Mcgurk said:

“Today’s announcement will be a sigh of relief to supported businesses all over the UK.

“The decision to increase the funding is a lifeline to many supported businesses which provide meaningful, sustainable employment and support to thousands of people who would otherwise struggle to find employment.

“Thank you Paul Sweeney for everything you did to raise awareness of the real threat that supported businesses were facing.”
